Phyllida 5th March 2020

Read at Professor Simon Frosticks Funeral Service by Jo Gibson. 02/03/2020 Eulogy from a Physicist – Adapted from Aaron Freeman You want a physicist to speak at your funeral. You want a physicist to talk to your grieving family and friends about the first law of thermodynamics, so they will understand your energy has not died, that in the universe no energy is created and none destroyed. Perhaps the physicist would say that all the photons that ever bounced off your face, all the particles, hundreds of trillions of particles, whose paths were interrupted by your smile, by the touch of your hand have raced off, their ways forever changed by you. And all the photons that bounced from you were gathered in the detectors of their eyes, creating constellations whose energy goes on forever. Then he might remind us how all your energy is given off as heat. And tell your loved ones that the warmth that flowed through you in life is still here, still part of all that we are, even as we mourn. The physicist will tell your friends that amid the energies of the cosmos, you gave as good as you got. Your friends will know that all your energy, every vibration, every Btu of heat, every wave of every particle that was you remains in this world. You can hope your family will be comforted to know your energy’s still around. According to that law, not a bit of you is gone; you’re just less orderly..”
